New Delhi, March 14, 2010: Prof. P. K. S. Pandey, a distinguished professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, released the Self-Tutor Book of Zo-English-Hindi today during the Sunday Worship Service of MELC Delhi in Munirka. This marks the first book among the Zous in India to receive an International Standard Book Number (ISBN).
The book was released by Prof. Pandey from the Centre for Linguistics, School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies, JNU, New Delhi, in the presence of government officials, scholars, students, church leaders, and various community representatives.
In his speech, Prof. P. K. S. Pandey expressed his honour in releasing the book, stating, “It is a great privilege for me to be associated with the launch of this valuable book. Philip’s work is pioneering in the field of Zo languages. It is rare to see high-ranking officials writing about language and culture — such works are usually produced by academicians, and even among them, such contributions are uncommon. I am deeply inspired by his efforts. JNU takes pride in having Philip as a research student, and I hope his work will inspire educated youth and others.”
MELCD Pastor T. Lalpu offered blessings for the author and his book.
Philip Thanglienmang, the author, shared insights into the book’s journey, stating, “The traditional shawls — Puanlaisan (worn by men) and Puandum (worn by women) — symbolize the identity of the Zou people.” He further revealed that the book took eight years to complete.
Acknowledging the typically high cost of books written by scholars, the author ensured that his work was priced affordably at Rs. 200, making it accessible to a wider audience.
