Established
on 5th June 1897, St. Andrew’s
Church in Hubli emerged from the spiritual needs of a growing community of
British soldiers, civil officers, and railway personnel stationed along the
expanding Southern Mahratta Railway network. In the decades following 1848, the
Anglican flock in Hubli possessed no permanent house of prayer, gathering
instead in open-air spaces, railway waiting rooms, and the provisional Railway
Institute whenever itinerant chaplains visited from Dharwad or Belgaum. Through
the tireless devotion of visiting clergymen and key pioneers such as Mr
Huddleston, the then Chief Engineer of the M&SM Railway, whose dedicated
efforts were mounted to erect a sanctuary for the faithful, the present church was successfully
established. Enduring rugged journeys by rail and makeshift transport
across regional outposts, those early missionaries laid the foundation for what
would become an enduring sanctuary of worship. Today, as a heritage
congregation under the Church of South India, St. Andrew’s Church stands as a
lasting monument to that steadfast legacy, continuing to extend warmth,
fellowship, and spiritual refuge to all who enter its doors.
On a blessed Sunday,
6 August 2023, we had the privilege of visiting St. Andrew’s Church, Hubli. Bro
Lema Neihsial (MTh-I Student, United Theological College, Bengaluru) shared a
heart-touching message drawn from practical life and personal experience, while Bro Bruce K. Thangkhal (BD-II, UTC-B) shared insights on the genesis of the Manipur violence and the destruction of
churches in the region. We received a warm welcome and generous hospitality
from the presbyter-in-charge. We owe our heartfelt gratitude to God Almighty
and to the gracious members of the church for their warmth and fellowship.
