NE Woman Denied Justice After Harassment Complaint in Gurgaon

New Delhi, Nov 16, 2013: A 25-year-old woman from Manipur, working at a call centre in Gurgaon, was allegedly sexually harassed by her manager. But when she approached the Gurgaon Sector-18 Police Station on November 14, her complaint was not taken seriously. Shockingly, the police asked her to “show proof” of the harassment and directed her to the Labour Court instead.

The young woman, employed at IPGS Call Centre as a Senior Sales Analyst since June, accused her tech manager, Mr Manoj (name changed), of repeated harassment. She said he stalked her, sent inappropriate messages like “you are looking hot and sexy,” and even touched her inappropriately. Despite telling him to stop several times, the behaviour continued.

“I needed the job to support myself and my sick mother,” the victim said. “Even though I was facing constant pressure and humiliation, I continued to work.”

She further alleged that she had not received her salaries for September (₹15,000) and October (₹16,400). On October 18, she was forced to take leave without pay without any clear reason. Other senior staff members, Mr Rajeev (name changed) (Ops Manager) and Mr Rajesh (name changed), promised to notify her about her leave status and salary, but never followed up. Her calls have since gone unanswered.

On Thursday, November 16, 2013, the North East Helpline, led by Dr Alana Golmei and media in-charge Bruce K. Thangkhal, visited the Sector-18 Police Station and submitted a written complaint against Mr Manoj. They had a heated discussion with Station House Officer Mr Praveen Malik, demanding immediate action.

Following their intervention, police raided the call centre. However, none of the accused managers were present during the raid.

SHO Mr Praveen Malik assured that the accused would be arrested soon. But as of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been made. “We need to keep pressure on the police to ensure action is taken,” said Dr Golmei.
