MEDIA RELEASE
Monday, the 7th April, 2025
1. Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) extends sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, for facilitating a peace dialogue at New Delhi on April 5, 2025 between All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) & Federation of Civil Societies (FOCS) on one side and Zomi Council (ZC), Hmar Inpui (HI-GHQ), United Zou Organisation (UZO) and Kuki-Zo Council (KZC)on the other. We also commend all parties for committing to non-violent resolutions.
2. TIM however regrets the refusal of Co-Ordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), top conglomerate of Meitei Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), to participate in the peace meeting. This weakens the mandate and legitimacy of the Meitei community representation, pointing to the lack of the community's trust in the on-going peace initiative.
3. TIM has long waited for such dialogues since the outbreak of violence on 3rd May, 2023, and welcomes this breakthrough with hope. It is worthy to note that a prior attempt at peace and immediate cessation of violence, planned for 6th May, 2023 between Thadou Inpi and COCOMI on the basis of community understanding, unfortunately was aborted due to serious threats from Kuki supremacist elements. This was a missed opportunity that would have prevented escalation and extension of the violence and loss of many lives and properties due to the violence.
4. The continued disruption by some anti-peace elements like the Coordinating Committee on Village Volunteers (CCVV) led by Kuki-Zo Village Volunteer, Eastern Zone (KZVV-EZ) and Pseudo forum called "Federation Council of 5" viz. fake Thadou Tribe Council-GHQ (TTC-GHQ), Any Kuki Tribe Council , Manipur (AKT-M), Kuki Reformation Forum (KReF), Lomlhang Som (LS) and World Kuki Zo Intellectual Council-GHQ (WKZIC-GHQ) both the groups representing the Kukis remains a major obstacle at the moment. Moreover, the government's failure to ensure free movement along national highways both in the valley and the hills, even under President's Rule, is a cause for serious concern as this undermines India's sovereignty and puts into question Government of India's ability, or political will, or seriousness to enforce rule of law and bring stability in the region.
5. TIM is of the view that if the Indian government can bring peace and stability in Kashmir, why not in Manipur? It is most unfortunate that Manipur society has been heavily impacted by insurgency-ralated violence and violence between different groups over the past decades since the early 1990s.
6. As an unwavering ardent advocate for peace, stability and non-violent resolutions throughout the course of the tragic Manipur violence, with Thadous having been the most affected yet silenced victims, TIM remains committed to peace and urges all parties to come together for lasting peace and stability in Manipur.
Statement: "Thadou is a distinct ethnic group of people. Thadou is not Kuki, or underneath Kuki, or part of Kuki, but a separate, independent entity from Kuki. Any organization that incorporates "Thadou" but espouses Kuki and mis-portrays Thadou as Kuki or a part of Kuki is illegitimate and does not represent Thadou people and interest" – Thadou Convention, 2024.
