Guidelines for Fasting
- Matthew 6:16-18*: When you fast, don't look gloomy like hypocrites do. Instead, anoint your head and wash your face so that only God sees your fasting. He will reward you.
- Isaiah 58:3-4*: Fasting should be accompanied by humility and seeking God's face, not seeking personal gain or recognition.
- Joel 2:12-13*: Fast with a sincere heart, accompanied by weeping and mourning, and God will be gracious and compassionate ¹ ².
Purpose of Fasting
- Ezra 8:21-23: Fasting and prayer can be used to seek God's protection and guidance.
- Acts 13:2-3: Fasting and prayer can be used to seek God's guidance and direction for important decisions.
- *Daniel 9:3*: Fasting and prayer can be used to seek God's mercy and forgiveness .
Examples of Fasting
- Esther 4:16: Esther and her maids fasted for three days before approaching the king.
- Nehemiah 1:4: Nehemiah fasted and prayed for days, mourning and seeking God's help.
- Luke 2:37: Anna, a widow, worshiped God with fasting and prayer night and day.
