Nambol Ambush Underscores Risks of AFSPA Exclusion in Meitei Areas
A deadly ambush in Nambol, Bishnupur district, tonight has left two personnel of the 33 Assam Rifles dead and four others injured. Unidentified Meitei gunmen attacked the convoy, sparking outrage and grave concerns over security in the region. This incident starkly highlights the potential consequences of the state government's decision to exclude the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from specific jurisdictions within Imphal Valley, notably in Meitei-dominated areas.
The exclusion of AFSPA in these areas has arguably compromised the capacity of security forces to respond to emerging threats and maintain order. By removing the special powers conferred by AFSPA, the state government has engendered vulnerabilities in regions susceptible to insurgent activities.
The Nambol incident is a stark reminder of the potential consequences of this policy shift, which may undermine the efficacy of counter-insurgency operations and destabilize the delicate security balance in North-East India. The selective application of AFSPA, with exclusions in certain areas contrasted against its continued enforcement in others, fosters perceptions of differential treatment, thereby exacerbating inter-community tensions.
Furthermore, the diminution of AFSPA's scope may impede the operational latitude of security forces in executing effective counter-insurgency strategies in affected regions, potentially leading to an increase in militant activities and a deterioration of law and order.
