Meitei Man Killed After Crossing Buffer Zone in Henglep

A man from the Meitei community, identified as Mayanglambam Rishikanta of Kakching Khunou, was brutally killed on Monday (19 Jan) in the Henglep area after allegedly crossing a Kuki-controlled buffer zone. Sources said the victim, son of M. Tombi Singh, was attacked and killed by suspected UKNA militants.

Earlier reports also stated that on Tuesday evening, around 6:30 pm, another Meitei man, Mayanglambam (tribal name Ginminthang), husband of Chingnu Haokip, was abducted by armed miscreants from Tuibong in Churachandpur district. The attackers are suspected to be members of the UKNA. The couple were reportedly taken towards Natjang under Henglep Police Station, where the husband is believed to have been killed by the abductors.

According to sources, Mrs Chingnu Haokip had obtained prior permission from the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and Tuibong DHQ authorities to allow her husband to visit her for a few days. The husband, who had been working in Nepal, had returned on leave and travelled with official approval. He is originally from Kakching Khunou.

However, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) has issued a formal clarification on January 22, strongly denying any involvement in the incident. The organisation stated that it had no knowledge of any permission being granted to the deceased to visit the area and clarified that it was not connected to the kidnapping or killing. The KNO further asserted that under no circumstances would spouses from other communities be subjected to such acts.

The victim is reported to have been working in Nepal and had returned on leave. He originally hailed from Kakching Khunou. The incident has once again raised serious concerns over civilian safety and movement across buffer zones amid continuing tensions in the region.
