CoTU Imposes Emergency Bandh Over Security Operations

Kangpokpi, June 22, 2026: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has announced an emergency indefinite bandh along National Highway-2 (NH-2) and National Highway-37 (NH-37), citing concerns over what it described as partial and selective security operations in the Leimakhong–Kangchup area amid ongoing tensions involving Kuki and Kachha Naga communities.

In a press release issued on 21 June 2026, CoTU expressed strong concern over reports of security actions that, according to the organization, have created a perception of bias among affected communities. The committee stated that the primary responsibility of security forces and the government is to safeguard all citizens without discrimination and ensure impartial enforcement of law and order.

The organization also referred to the recent killings of three Christian pastors and twelve Kuki villagers, as well as reported attacks on villages, destruction of homes, and displacement of civilians. CoTU called for a transparent and time-bound investigation into the incidents and urged authorities to bring all perpetrators to justice.

Among its demands, CoTU called for impartial security operations, protection of vulnerable villages, independent investigations into the killings, immediate measures to prevent further violence, and accountability for any lapses in security duties.

The bandh took effect from 4:00 PM on June 21 and will continue until further notice. Medical emergencies, ambulance services, and humanitarian relief activities have been exempted. CoTU appealed to the public to maintain peace and discipline during the protest.
