Lamka, June 26, 2026 (DIO): UNAU Day 2026, observed as the Day of Siblings with Disabilities, was celebrated on Friday at the Auditorium, 2nd Floor, Gospel Centenary Hall, Hebron Veng, New Lamka, Churachandpur. The event was organized by the Centre for Community Initiative (CCI), Pearsonmun Village, to honour the important role of siblings of persons with disabilities and promote inclusion, understanding, and community support.
Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur, Shri Krishna Kumar, IAS, attended the programme as the Chief Guest. He praised CCI, specially-abled children, their siblings, and parents for their dedication and resilience.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner said the Constitution and recent judgments of the Supreme Court and High Courts guarantee dignity and equality for all citizens. He reaffirmed the district administration’s commitment to the welfare, education, and empowerment of persons with disabilities through initiatives such as the UDID scheme, scholarships, and the distribution of assistive devices, including wheelchairs, smart sticks, and artificial limbs.
He also highlighted the government's efforts under the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan to improve accessibility through better social, health, and physical infrastructure. Stressing that public awareness remains a major challenge, he called for collective responsibility in building an inclusive society and assured full support from the district administration for initiatives promoting the well-being of persons with disabilities.
The programme began with a welcome address by Mr. Pausuanlal, Manager (MARC), CCI. The event was conducted by physiotherapists Ms. Ngaikim and Ms. Goungaihlun, while Ms. Parnei Vaiphei, Special Educator, provided sign language interpretation.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of the Ginmalsawm Tonsing Award 2026, coordinated by Ms. Zabeth Ngailianvung, PO (NCF). Social Inclusion Awards were presented by Mr. Paul Rozarlien, PC (Advocacy), while students of The Malsawm Initiative (TMI) entertained the audience with special performances.
The awards were presented by Deputy Commissioner Shri Krishna Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Shri Seiminthang Lenthang, and CCI Board Chairman Shri Vanlallian.
The Ginmalsawm Tonsing Award 2026 was conferred on Mr. Thangchonsei Kipgen of Elcism High School and Miss Taithangmawi of Special Blind School, Durtlang, Aizawl. The Social Inclusion Award 2026 was presented to YPA Bungmual Unit and ECA Mission Department, K. Salbung, Churachandpur, in recognition of their contributions towards promoting inclusion and support for persons with disabilities.
