INDIA and MYANMAR are actively discussing a targeted land swap to resolve a long-standing 2.8 km undemarcated stretch along their shared boundary. The proposed exchange, focusing on the area between Border Pillars 65 and 68 in Manipur’s Chandel district adjoining the strategic Kabaw Valley, involves a 1.4-square-mile adjustment designed to establish a definitive, mutually agreed border.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed on August 5, 2026 that bilateral talks regarding unresolved border sectors remain ongoing. While the vast majority of the 1,643 km Indo-Myanmar border has been formally mapped, roughly 171 km remains disputed or undemarcated due to complex terrain and local ethnic sensitivities.
Settling this specific sector in the Kuki-inhabited region is seen as a critical step toward improving regional stability, curbing illegal cross-border movement, and boosting border security management. Authorities hope that formalizing the boundary will also facilitate future infrastructure projects and streamline regulated trade under India's Act East Policy once local security conditions stabilize.
