This year marks the 150th anniversary of the composition of Vande Mataram. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay composed this song. Rabindranath Tagore set the tune for it. It was first sung in 1896 at the Calcutta session of the Congress. The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly on the night of 14 August 1947 began with “Vande Mataram”. Today, read the original form of this song, which has become a powerful slogan of freedom, and its Hindi interpretation.
Interpretation
Yogi and philosopher Sri Aurobindo rendered this song into a prose interpretation.
Oh Mother! Your land is full of water, laden with fruits and flowers, cooled by the cool fragrance of the Malaya mountains, covered with fields of swaying crops. Your nights are filled with the joy of moonlight and adorned with trees, flowers and leaves. You are the one who spreads smiles, speaks sweetly, and gives happiness. The voices rising from the throats of your millions of sons echo in the sky, and millions of arms wield swords and weapons.
Who says you are weak, Mother? You are immense power, the one who overcomes adversity and destroys enemies. You are knowledge, dharma, in the heart, and the essence of life. You are life, the power of arms, and the devotion of the heart. We worship you, Mother! You are Durga, the one who wields ten weapons, Lakshmi, seated on a lotus flower. You are Saraswati, the pure Mother! I bow to you.
