MEDIA RELEASE
Monday, the 17th March, 2025
The Thadou Students' Association (TSA) is deeply concerned about the escalating tension between different groups among the non-Naga tribal communities, particularly between the Kuki/Kuki-Zo, Hmar and Zomi groups in Churachandpur, following the assault on Hmar leader Richard Laltanpuia at VK Montessori School Campus last night.
While condemning the unfortunate violent incident, TSA would like to emphasize the urgent need for peace, unity, and reconciliation. We strongly denounce any form of violence that threatens the social fabric and collective harmony.
The Thadou community remains committed to peace, dialogue and non-violent resolutions. We urge all concerned groups viz. Kuki/Kuki-Zo, Hmar, and Zomi, to prioritize negotiations over hostility.
We call upon all concerned community leaders and student bodies to unite in resolving differences through dialogue. We would also like to appeal to armed groups and village volunteers to exercise restraint and work toward constructive engagement rather than resorting to violence. The security and well-being of our people must be the top priority.
We also call upon the government and civil society organizations to facilitate peace-building efforts in the spirit of justice, fairness, and mutual respect.
Statement: "Thadou is a distinct ethnic group of people. Thadou is not Kuki, or underneath Kuki, or part of Kuki, but a separate, independent entity from Kuki. Any organisation that incorporates "Thadou" but espouses Kuki and mis- portrays Thadou as Kuki or a part of Kuki is illegitimate and does not represent Thadou people and interest" - Thadou Convention Declaration - 2024.
