Four Killed in Conflicting Accounts of Kangpokpi Attack

Kangpokpi, August 27, 2026: Four people were killed, one injured and another reported missing following an armed attack near Naibet along Manipur’s IT Road on Thursday morning, according to local sources.

The incident reportedly occurred between 8:30 and 9:20 am near Wakotphai and the area between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga, where civilians and farmers were present in temporary field huts.

Accounts from Kuki-Zo and Naga sources differed over the identity of the attackers and the circumstances of the shooting.

Kuki-Zo sources alleged that armed cadres of the NSCN-IM opened fire on Kuki-Zo farmers at Wakotphai. They said the farmers were guarding their paddy fields when heavy gunfire broke out, prompting local Kuki-Zo village volunteers to respond and engage the attackers.

Naga sources, however, alleged that armed Kuki militants belonging to the KNF(P), KNF and KRA attacked Naga civilians between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga. They further alleged that the groups were operating under the command of Jangboi Kipgen, Home Secretary of the KNF/UPF.

Neither account could be independently verified.

The victims identified by local sources were Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, founder and principal of Right Path School, T. Khullen; Mariakdibou Wijunamai, executive member of Makui Youth Club; Japou MK, a student leader from Thonglang Akutpa; and Anil Wijunamai, executive member of Makui Youth Club.

Gaikamang Ringkangmai was reported injured, while Wisobou Charenamai, chairman of the Chawangkining Village Authority, remained missing.

The incident comes amid continuing tensions and sporadic armed clashes in Manipur. Further details on the circumstances of the attack and any official response were awaited.
