A member of the Kuki Chin National Army (KNA) and a civilian farmer were killed in an early morning ambush on 03 July 2035, allegedly carried out by the Bangladesh Army near the Ruma zone.
According to the Media Wing of the KNA, the incident took place at around 6:00 a.m. when a group of armed KNA personnel from Mualpi village were on their way to conduct an operation in the Ruma area. While resting during their movement, they were reportedly surrounded and attacked by Bangladeshi forces. In the attack, Laltlanhthang Bawm, a newly recruited KNA private, was killed on the spot.
A civilian, Mr. Lalhimsang Bawm, a jhum (shifting cultivation) farmer from Munnuam village who happened to be nearby, was also shot and killed during the encounter.
Later that night, Mr. Ramthang (also known as Pasen Bawm), a resident of Mualpi village, was arrested by the Bangladesh Army on suspicion of collaborating with the KNA. He was reportedly taken to a military camp, where he was subjected to inhuman torture, including brutal physical beatings. Unconfirmed reports suggest that he was subsequently transported towards Chittagong.
This incident has once again highlighted the ongoing plight of the Kuki-Chin people in Bangladesh, who have long been deprived of basic human rights, including access to quality healthcare, education, and developmental opportunities. For decades, the community has faced systemic neglect, marginalisation, and military oppression, further escalating tensions in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region.
The KNA has condemned the attack and alleged human rights violations, calling for international attention and intervention to ensure justice and protection for the Kuki-Chin population. Local human rights organisations have echoed these concerns and are demanding an independent investigation into the incident and the broader situation faced by the community.
As of now, the Bangladesh Army has not issued an official response regarding the incident.
