But here’s the twist: the car didn’t roll into Aizawl. Nope. It had to be dismantled in Lalaghat, Assam, and then carried piece by piece by 50 exhausted porters. Imagine being the guy carrying just the steering wheel, wondering what all the fuss was about.
Once the parts reached Sairang, Rochhinga and a British officer played Lego Masters, reassembling the car. Finally, on September 10, 1942, the grand four-wheeled beast zoomed (well, crawled) into Aizawl.
The Town Cryer’s Big Day
For extra safety, an army of road workers rushed to smoothen the path so that the car didn’t get stuck and embarrass everyone.
The Legacy
That day, the people of Aizawl learned two things:
-
Cars exist.
-
They take a village—literally—to bring one in.
The event marked the beginning of modern transport in the city. And thanks to Rochhinga, Aizawl upgraded from footpaths to four wheels—though we’re still wondering if those porters ever forgave him.
