Zomi Council reminds Governor on pending appeals, calls for real solutions

Lamka, August 19, 2025: The Zomi Council met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla in Lamka this afternoon, urging him to act on the memoranda and appeals submitted earlier this year. Delegates expressed disappointment that despite repeated approaches, the people's suffering remains unaddressed.

The Council reminded the Governor of three key submissions on January 7, May 3 and July 18 that called for political dialogue, justice for victims of ethnic violence and urgent intervention in the displacement crisis and the need for an  airstrip in Lamka. Thousands of families remain uprooted, many still struggling in makeshift shelters.

The Council also pressed for a single-window system in Lamka, noting that existing online portals are mostly unpublicized and also inconvenient to access due to erratic power and feeble signal of internet to upload documents. Rather, a single window office  which would physically facilitate the public  to submit their grievances directly and ensure they are acted upon transparently and on time will solve many  grievances of the students and govt servants, the delegation emphasized.

Later, Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, Director General of Assam Rifles (DGAR), met ZC delegation to discuss security matters. He assured that AR will assist at any time if requested for. The delegation clarified that provision of security as status symbol or hollow self promotion is detested and  "the people are our best security. What our people want is  genuine political and administrative solutions."
