Lamka, September 13, 2025 — The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his historic visit to the region, seeking a lasting political solution for the Kuki-Zo people.
In the memo, the KZC highlighted the community’s suffering, stating that over 250 lives have been lost, more than 360 churches destroyed, 7,000 homes burnt, and 40,000 people displaced due to violence attributed to the majority Meitei community.
The Council reiterated its long-standing demand for a Union Territory with legislature under Article 239A of the Constitution, emphasizing that separation from Manipur is essential for peace, security, and survival.
The memo also referenced the September 4, 2025 agreement signed between the Government of India and SoO groups for a time-bound political settlement. The KZC urged the Prime Minister to expedite the process, expressing faith that his leadership would “heal wounds, restore dignity, and safeguard the future” of the Kuki-Zo people.
This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the region in nearly four decades, making the occasion significant for the Kuki-Zo community’s appeal.
