GOVERNMENT offices and several civilian homes were set ablaze in Banmauk town as the Myanmar military, known as the Tatmadaw, launched fresh operations to reclaim the area from joint resistance forces of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the People's Defence Force (PDF).
Eyewitnesses reported intense shelling and heavy gunfire throughout the town, forcing residents to flee for safety. Smoke and flames were seen rising from residential neighbourhoods and administrative buildings, leaving much of the area in ruins.
Banmauk, located in Sagaing Region, had been temporarily under the control of anti-junta forces before the Tatmadaw began its offensive. Local rights groups accused the junta of targeting civilian properties and using airstrikes in populated zones — actions widely condemned as war crimes by international observers.
Humanitarian groups and democracy activists have strongly criticised and condemned the Myanmar military junta for its continued brutality and disregard for human life. They called on the international community to step up pressure on the regime and support the pro-democracy movement that has been resisting military rule since the February 2021 coup.
"The Tatmadaw's scorched-earth tactics only deepen the suffering of innocent people," one activist said. "This is not an act of defence, but a campaign of terror."
The situation in Banmauk remains tense, with many civilians trapped amid the fighting and widespread destruction across the town.
