Manipur Police Probe Assault on IGP During Festival Protest

Imphal, Nov 20, 2025: A group of around 50–60 people, reportedly COCOMI volunteers, marched from Govindajee Crossing toward Hapta Kangjeibung around 1:15 PM on Thursday, protesting against the Sangai Festival 2025. The march took place despite prohibitory orders issued by the Imphal East District Magistrate.

According to police, security teams repeatedly tried to stop and peacefully disperse the crowd. IGP (Zone–I) Themthing Ngashangva, IPS, was present on the ground, supervising the operation. Police, including women personnel, made several attempts to block the protestors. However, the mob turned aggressive and hurled water bottles and placards at the police. A woman protestor also assaulted the IGP and hurled racial slurs at him while he was performing his duty, police said.

The crowd later moved toward the Palace premises, where house guards of the Hon'ble MP allowed them inside, obstructing police action. According to police, the IGP went to the gate to question the guards but did not enter the palace premises.

A criminal case has been filed at Porompat Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. The charges include assault on a public servant, obstruction of duty, breaching barricades, racial abuse, and unauthorised movement toward a protected area.

Police are working to identify the woman who attacked the IGP, using video footage and witness accounts.

The Manipur Police stated that all personnel on duty acted with restraint and used only the minimum force required to restore order.
