Kuki Independence War Memorial Committee has appealed to the governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla for the protection and preservation of the historic Kuki Inn Estate at Babupara in Imphal stating that Kuki Inn Estate is a historic landmark that embodies the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of the Kuki people
Kuki Independence War Memorial Committee appealed to the governor to provide full protection and security to the entire Kuki Inn complex and its adjoining estate, initiate restoration and preservation efforts for the damaged sections and recognize the Kuki Inn Estate as a protected cultural and heritage landmark of Manipur.
In its letter, the committee stated that the Kuki Inn and its adjoining memorial complex were established to honor the supreme sacrifices of the Kukis who valiantly resisted the British colonial forces during the Kuki Rising (1917–1919) - a defining struggle for freedom and dignity.
The committee added that the heroic uprising, which lasted nearly three years, saw, over 120 Kuki warriors killed, 126 villages burnt, and Rs. 1,67,441 extracted from the Kukis as reparation through forced penal labour the com
"In recognition of this historic episode, the Government of India, sanctioned funds for the construction a memorial complex on 0.3522 hectares of land at Babupara, Imphal and within this estate stands the Kuki Inn, a three-storied museum and community complex, along with two important monuments - one commemorating the Kuki Heroes of the 1917-1919 Uprising, and another honoring the Kuki Freedom Fighters who served under the Indian National Army (INA)", the letter stated.
In the wake of the ethnic conflict, the entire Kuki community was forced to flee from Imphal, in May 2023— leaving behind not only their homes but also their heritage and today, not a single kuki soul remains to watch over the Kuki Inn Estate, a site that holds within its walls the priceless legacy of our ancestors, the committee added.
" With deep sorrow, we note that during the early days of the violence, one of the buildings within the complex was reportedly set ablaze. What once stood as a proud symbol of our collective memory now lies vulnerable - exposed to neglect, encroachment, and the silent erosion of a history that deserves to be preserved", the letter added.
Further the committee went on to state that the Kuki Inn is not merely a physical structure; it is a living symbol of identity, unity, and remembrance - a testament to the shared sacrifices that bind Kuki community to the broader history of Manipur and India.
