LITAN SAREIKHONG, Feb 8: An incident involving a scuffle between a few intoxicated individuals from the Tangkhul and Kuki communities was reported at Litan Sarei Khong in Ukhrul district on the evening of February 7. The altercation occurred around 8.30 pm, during which one individual, identified as AS Sterling, son of late AS Paoshim, sustained injuries.
According to a press release issued by the Litan Sarei Khong Village Authority, the injured person's brother and sister later approached the village chief, Mr Hemkhothang Baite, at around 10 pm to report the matter. Following a peaceful discussion, both sides mutually agreed to resolve the issue through customary means, and a meeting was scheduled for Sunday, February 8.
However, the Village Authority stated that the agreed meeting did not take place as the victim's family allegedly failed to attend. Instead, a group of heavily armed villagers from Sikibung reportedly launched a violent attack on the residence of the Chief of Litan Sarei Khong.
Despite police intervention, the attackers allegedly continued their violent acts by targeting the house of the individual said to be involved in the initial scuffle.
The press release further claimed that while retreating from Litan Sarei Khong, the armed group fired seven rounds of bullets near the Litan Police Station, creating fear and panic in the otherwise peaceful town. An FIR has been lodged against the villagers from Sikibung for unlawful actions and for attempting to escalate the situation.
Strongly condemning the violence, the Village Authority appealed to the public to maintain peace and communal harmony, urging all concerned not to communalise what it described as a simple altercation involving a few intoxicated individuals.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue, customary practices and lawful means, stressing that peace remains a collective responsibility.
