New Delhi, May 12, 2026: In a heartbreaking incident, two youths from Northeast India lost their lives in Delhi while struggling to build a better future through employment opportunities in the capital. One youth from Assam reportedly died by suicide, while another from Manipur suffered a fatal heart attack.
According to Robin Hibu IPS, President of Helping Hands, the Manipuri youth’s body was flown back home in a coffin today, while the Assamese youth was cremated at Green Park cremation ground in South Delhi.
Robin Hibu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that despite repeated appeals, no Assamese individual in Delhi reportedly came forward to assist with the last rites of the deceased Assamese youth. Eventually, Helping Hands volunteer Raj Hanand, along with a police personnel, conducted the cremation.
Hibu also mentioned that volunteer Naresh Kumar worked throughout the night to facilitate the smooth transportation of the Manipuri youth’s mortal remains to Imphal.
“One was working in a petty job while the other had come to Delhi searching for employment along with his younger sister,” Hibu said.
He described the tragedy as a painful reminder of the struggles faced by many young people from the Northeast who migrate to metropolitan cities in search of livelihood and survival.
“Every time Helping Hands sends back lifeless bodies of Northeast youths in coffins, the same painful question echoes — do we really have no future or opportunities for our youth back home in the eight Northeast states?” he lamented.
Hibu further expressed concern over the increasing number of youths arriving in major cities despite harsh conditions, desperately searching for jobs and often facing extreme hardship.
The incident has once again highlighted the emotional, economic, and social challenges faced by many Northeast youths living away from home in search of better opportunities.
