HENGLEP, June 17, 2026: MLA Letzamang Haokip has strongly condemned the killing of a civilian, identified as Lenminsang, son of Lenkhogin Haokip, who was allegedly shot by joint security forces at North Songkong village in Henglep Sub-Division.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the MLA described the incident as shocking and unacceptable, stating that the death of a civilian at the hands of those responsible for public protection raises serious concerns and damages public trust.
Haokip also referred to allegations made by eyewitnesses, who claimed that the victim's clothes were removed and his body was taken away by the security forces after he was shot. He further noted allegations that attempts were later made to portray the incident as a fake encounter.
The MLA said that if the allegations are proven true, they would amount to a serious abuse of authority and a violation of the rule of law. He called for an immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident.
Expressing concern over the delay in returning the mortal remains to the family, Haokip said every family has the right to conduct the last rites of their loved one with dignity and respect.
He demanded the immediate recovery and handover of the body to the family, a thorough judicial and independent inquiry into the incident, and strict action against all those found responsible. He also urged authorities to take action against any attempt to conceal facts, tamper with evidence or misrepresent the circumstances surrounding the death.
The MLA extended his condolences to the bereaved family and pledged his support in their pursuit of truth and justice.
