NIA Takes Over Investigation into Ukhrul Firing Incident

The Central Government has handed over the investigation of a firing incident in Manipur's Ukhrul district to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), citing the seriousness of the case and its possible links to terrorism-related activities.

According to an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on March 26, 2026, the case originates from an FIR registered on March 11, 2026, at Litan Police Station in Ukhrul district. The FIR relates to an incident in which suspected Tangkhul volunteers allegedly entered a poppy cultivation area in the Thawai Kuki Hill Range (Mapithel Hill Range), destroyed poppy plants, and set fire to some huts located in the field.

The order states that an exchange of gunfire reportedly took place between the suspected volunteers and residents of Thawai Kuki village and nearby villages. During the incident, four persons went missing. Two were later rescued during search operations on 12 March 2026, while the remaining two were found dead.

The Central Government noted that the case involves allegations of the use of firearms by suspected cadres of NSCN (IM) and may fall under provisions of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008. Authorities said the incident has wider national security implications and requires a thorough investigation to uncover any larger conspiracy behind the violence.

Exercising its powers under Sections 6 and 8 of the NIA Act, 2008, the Ministry of Home Affairs directed the NIA to take over and investigate the case.

The order was issued by Rajeev Kumar, Under Secretary to the Government of India, and copies were forwarded to the Director General of the NIA, the Chief Secretary of Manipur, and the Director General of Police, Manipur.
