Prof. Dr. Nomi Doungel, Head of the Department of Physiology at Gauhati Medical College, passed away on Monday, 13 July 2026, at around 7:30 p.m. while undergoing treatment at the Multi Speciality Hospital of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
According to family sources, Dr. Doungel had been admitted due to prolonged health complications. She had been living with diabetes and was suffering from failure of both kidneys. While undergoing dialysis, she reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be revived despite medical efforts.
Dr. Doungel was a respected academician and medical professional who served as the Head of the Department of Physiology at Gauhati Medical College, making significant contributions to medical education and healthcare.
She is survived by her siblings: Mr. Thangkhosei Doungel, a retired BSNL official; Dr. Zami Doungel, a neurologist at Apollo Excelcare Hospital, Guwahati; and Mr. Lunkhohen Doungel, a retired UCO Bank employee.
Her passing has saddened colleagues, students, and well-wishers, who remember her for her dedicated service to the medical profession. May her soul rest in peace.
