Two people have been arrested in connection with a case involving mob violence and an alleged attempt to set fire to abandoned houses at Kanto Sabal in the Leimakhong area, Manipur, on 11 July 2026.
According to Manipur Police, around 600 people attempted to advance towards Kanto Sabal during the day. Joint teams of the Manipur Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF), and the Army intervened promptly, preventing what officials described as a potential communal clash. Security personnel also contained an alleged attempt by miscreants to burn abandoned houses, and no loss of life was reported.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Kammang Lhouvum (65), Chief of Hengjang Village and Chairman of the Leimakhong Area Protection Committee (LAPC), and Pagin Hangshing (30) of Khunkho Kuki Village. Police said a case has been registered, further investigation is underway, and efforts are continuing to arrest other individuals allegedly involved.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the arson incident, stating that the government acted swiftly to bring the situation under control. He said state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed in the area, and all security forces have been instructed to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
The Chief Minister expressed concern that the violence occurred after a prolonged period of relative peace in the state. He said the government views the incident as an attempt to derail ongoing peace efforts and alleged that certain vested interests are working to undermine stability. Security forces reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and law and order in the region.
