80th Independence Day Celebrated in Chandel District

Chandel, August 15, 2026 (DIO): The 80th Independence Day of India was celebrated with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm in Chandel district today at Maha Union Government Higher Secondary School Ground, Japhou.

Deputy Commissioner, Chandel, Smt. Mamoni Doley, IAS, graced the district-level celebration as the Chief Guest.

The Chief Guest took the salute from the Parade Commander, hoisted the National Flag and inspected the Guard of Honour by the contingents. The main highlight of the celebration was march-past by contingents representing Manipur Rifles, Manipur Police, VDF, NCC, various educational institutions and ASHA workers.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Smt. Mamoni Doley extended greetings on the occasion and paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices secured India’s Independence. She urged the people of Chandel to uphold peace, unity and mutual respect and work collectively for the district’s development.

Highlighting the district’s achievements, she stated that Chandel secured first position among all districts of Manipur in the HSLC Examination 2026 with a pass percentage of 97.38 per cent. She also highlighted progress in healthcare, rural development, connectivity, forest conservation and livelihood generation, including 13 Kayakalp recognitions, 100 per cent screening of children aged 0–6 years under RBSK, and the introduction of the ABDM Scan and Share facility at District Hospital, Chandel.

She further highlighted progress under the Aspirational Districts and Aspirational Blocks Programmes and appealed for continued public cooperation in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls and the forthcoming Census 2026–27.

As part of the celebration, awards, prizes and recommendation certificates as well as Red Blankets were presented to village chiefs, officers, officials, security personnel and frontline workers for their outstanding performance and dedicated services. 

A special citation was accorded to Ng. Parshing Moyon, MPS, today’s Parade Commander and Assistant Commandant (Adjutant), 8th Battalion Manipur Rifles, Leikun, in recognition of his service and to Rebulson Shongsir for winning a silver medal in the Junior Boys Badminton Championship.

High level police officers, members of Autonomous District Council, officers of various line departments, representatives of civil society organisations, village authorities, educational institutions, students, security personnel and members of the public also attended the celebration.
