New Delhi, August 31, 2026: The Union Government has deferred the Census exercise in Manipur following a high-level review meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday.
The meeting was held to assess the prevailing situation in Manipur and consider the demand raised by people in the state to defer the Census exercise before the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The meeting was attended by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and other senior officials.
According to the Manipur Chief Minister's Secretariat, the meeting agreed to defer the proposed Census exercise in the state, taking into consideration the “feelings and aspirations” of the people of Manipur.
Following the meeting, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and other central leaders for listening to the concerns of the people and fulfilling their aspirations.
He also thanked BJP national president Nitin Nabin for his continued support and appreciated the efforts of leaders of 14 civil society organisations and a delegation of BJP MLAs who had recently campaigned in New Delhi for the implementation of the NRC in Manipur.
The chief minister said regular engagement with central leaders and officials had contributed to Monday's decision.
Khemchand Singh also appealed against the use of bandhs and general strikes as a means of pressing demands, saying such actions would cause further hardship to ordinary people.
He urged civil society organisations to continue dialogue and extend cooperation to the administration in addressing the state's socio-political challenges.
The chief minister reaffirmed that both the Manipur and Union governments remain committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of the state.
