IMPHAL, Aug 26, 2026 — Security forces and Manipur Police have arrested at least 17 suspected insurgent cadres and recovered a large cache of firearms, ammunition and explosives in a series of operations across Manipur, according to police and security-force reports.
On Wednesday, a combined team of Thoubal district police and 46 Assam Rifles arrested an alleged active cadre of the RPF/PLA, identified as Ningombam Punshiba Singh, 30, alias Nanao and Selungba, son of N. Rajen Singh of Tekcham Mayai Leikai. He was arrested from Langathel near PHC Langathel under Khongjom police station in Thoubal district.
The same day, 5 Assam Rifles arrested and handed over a suspected UKNA cadre, identified as self-styled Sergeant Major Satngam Doungel, 43, of Saihenjang village, to Churachandpur police. A 9 mm Beretta pistol, five rounds of ammunition and a magazine were recovered from him.
In Thoubal district, a joint team of district police and 31 Assam Rifles arrested Sanglenmayum Sanjit Singh, 38, alias Mani, described as an active cadre of the KCP (PWG), near the auto-parking area of Thoubal Bazaar.
Separately, Imphal West police's CDO-I team, acting on intelligence corroborated by 33 Assam Rifles, arrested Laihaorungbam Sanatomba Singh, 48, alias Ashok and Tayai, an alleged active member of SOREPA, from his residence in Kongpal Chingangbam Leikai.
A separate search operation by CDO-I and 33 Assam Rifles at Phayeng Apun Lok riverside recovered a substantial cache of weapons, including a CMG, a modified .303 rifle, seven pistols, five single-barrel guns, a double-barrel gun and two hand grenades.
The operations followed several seizures and arrests reported on Tuesday.
In Churachandpur district, security forces recovered an MP-09, a single-barrel gun, a functional rocket, a pompi, eight rounds of 7.62x39 mm ammunition, two land mines, a mortar bomb, four detonators and an improvised fragmentation mine from the Nepali Basti area near Maovom village.
In Chandel district, police and 10 Assam Rifles arrested a suspected PREPAK cadre, Lemba Mutum, 40, near Border Pillar No. 72. An INSAS rifle, four magazines, 60 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition and a smartphone were recovered, authorities said.
Special CDO teams also arrested six suspected UPPK cadres from different locations. The suspects included Elangbam Rabikumar Singh, 24; Waikhom Arun Singh, 20; Ahongshangbam Avinash Singh alias Andy, 26; a juvenile; Elangbam Alexander Singh, 21; and Phuritshabam Koireng Singh, 51.
Police said the suspects disclosed involvement in alleged kidnapping, extortion and intimidation. Twenty-three UPPK letterheads, a Baofeng handheld wireless set, a silver Astar car and a Pleasure two-wheeler were seized.
In Senapati district, a joint force comprising Manipur Police, CoBRA, CRPF and the Mahila Battalion recovered two single-barrel guns, 78 live 12-bore rounds, 11 empty cases, ammunition cases, a cartridge belt, a charger, five vehicle registration plates and a military-surplus ammunition container from Taphou Kuki and Taphou Liangmai. Three bunkers were also destroyed during the operation, authorities said.
Police also reported the arrests of several suspected cadres accused of extortion. These included KCP (PWG) member Samom Michael Singh alias Achouba Meetei in Moirang and RPF/PLA cadre Ningthoujam Samson Singh, 30, in Ngaikhong Khunou. Another alleged RPF/PLA cadre, Lourembam Subhaschandra alias Thouba and Naochabi, 46, was arrested from his residence in Imphal West.
On August 24, CDO/Imphal East arrested two alleged SOREPA members, Laitonjam Rocky Singh, 37, and Pukhrambam Kumarjit Singh, 36, in Khurai Thangjam Leikai. Police said a handwritten extortion slip bearing a mobile number and the name SOREPA was recovered.
The same day, a joint operation at J. Songtun village in Kangpokpi recovered 16 12-bore guns, including two country-made weapons, 1,225 rounds of 12-bore ammunition, six wireless sets and three chargers, a telescope, and 18 BP vests with a pouch.
Authorities said some villagers, mainly women, blocked the security forces' withdrawal by placing stones on the road and demanded the return of firearms and ammunition whose verification they disputed. The situation was subsequently brought under control, police said.
In another operation at Kiyamgei Awang Leikai, CDO-Kakching arrested alleged RPF/PLA cadre Nameirakpam Sanju Meitei, 35. Police said an AK rifle, an SMG carbine, nine magazines, 737 rounds of assorted ammunition, three BP plates and three BP jackets were recovered.
A joint CDO/Imphal East and 28 Assam Rifles operation at the foothills of Sinam Kom village recovered a 7.62 SLR rifle, an INSAS rifle, a 9 mm pistol, several country-made and single-barrel guns, three No. 36 hand grenades, a mortar shell, ammunition and protective equipment.
On August 23, CDO-I teams arrested Oinam Gipson Singh, 26, at Moidangpok Maning Leikai. A .32 pistol loaded with four rounds was recovered, according to police.
The arrests and seizures come amid continuing security operations against armed groups and alleged extortion networks in several districts of Manipur, where authorities have stepped up searches for weapons and insurgent cadres.
