No members of the public attended the 80th Independence Day celebration at Senapati Public Ground, leaving the stadium largely deserted, local sources said.
The Nagas observed Naga Independence Day on August 14, a day before India’s Independence Day. The observance was held simultaneously in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, and at various places in Manipur.
The Naga political issue has been under negotiations between Naga groups and the Government of India for decades. The Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) in 2015 marked a significant development in the peace process, although a final political settlement has yet to be reached.
The Naga Independence Day observance continues to reflect the community's long-standing political aspirations and its demand for recognition of the Naga people's history, identity and political rights.
