Congress Flags Atrocities Against Women, Dalits, Minorities!

New Delhi, September 4, 2026: The Congress on Friday alleged that women, students, Dalits and minorities were being subjected to atrocities under BJP governments and demanded action against those responsible for such incidents.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba highlighted several cases, including the alleged attack on the father of Dalit student activist Nishu Azad, the alleged assault of women journalists by Delhi Police, the alleged harassment of 15-year-old Ruchika Singh, and the detention under the National Security Act (NSA) of Delhi University student and activist Akriti Chaudhary in connection with the Noida labour movement.

Lamba said the Congress and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi stood firmly with all the women and girls involved in these cases. She said the party would provide legal or financial assistance to the victims on a priority basis, if required.

On the alleged attack on Nishu Azad’s father, Lamba demanded that a case be registered against Swatantra Bharadwaj under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as well as for attempt to murder, and sought his arrest within 24 hours.

She alleged that Bharadwaj, who was associated with the BJP’s right-wing ecosystem, had violently assaulted Azad’s father during a democratic protest at Jantar Mantar. Lamba said Bharadwaj had openly acknowledged his violent actions in interviews and had used derogatory language against the Dalit community.

She further said that, in a video, Bharadwaj had referred to the protection of Delhi minister Kapil Mishra and Union minister Chirag Paswan.

Lamba said Nishu Azad had sought justice from Rahul Gandhi, adding that the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi were standing firmly by her and would continue to support her until justice was served.

Raising the alleged assault on women journalists Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan, Lamba said the two journalists were detained by police while they were attempting to ask Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta several important questions during the inauguration of a private hospital in Saket.

She alleged that the journalists were assaulted at the police station and suffered serious injuries. Lamba demanded the immediate suspension of the police personnel involved, registration of an FIR and release of the CCTV footage of the incident.

According to Lamba, the journalists wanted to raise questions concerning the death of 15-year-old Tanvi at AIIMS due to lack of treatment, the alleged gangrape of a minor inside a bus in Delhi-NCR, and the Home Minister’s presence at the inauguration of a private hospital instead of visiting AIIMS.

Lamba also criticised the BJP government over the arrest of Delhi University student and social activist Akriti Chaudhary, who, she said, had raised her voice against the crackdown on a labour movement in Noida.

She alleged that Noida District Magistrate Medha Rupam, who is the daughter of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, had suppressed the movement and that those supporting the labourers were booked under the NSA and sent to jail. According to Lamba, Chaudhary had been in jail for five months.

Lamba pointed out that the Allahabad High Court had recently quashed Akriti Chaudhary’s NSA detention, observing that the administration had failed to produce even a single piece of evidence establishing her guilt.

She further said the court had ordered compensation of Rs 5 lakh to Chaudhary, with the amount to be recovered from the salary of the district magistrate.

Referring to the case of 15-year-old Jantar Mantar protester Ruchika Singh, Lamba said the minor was being subjected to mental harassment by people linked to the establishment and by social media trolls.

Lamba quoted Ruchika as saying, “Modi ji has made my life a hell,” and alleged that the ruling BJP was attempting to intimidate and silence girls who raise questions.

The Congress leader said the party would continue to stand with all these girls in their fight for justice.
