Imphal, September 2, 2026: The 8th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly began in Imphal on Wednesday, with two Kuki-Zo MLAs making a historic physical return to the House after more than three years.
Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen and Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip Hangshing attended the first sitting of the session in person, marking the first physical participation by Kuki-Zo legislators in the Assembly in around three and a half years.
Speaking on his return to the Assembly, Haokholet Kipgen said he was happy to be back and attend the proceedings in person after a long gap.
Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, meanwhile, participated in the session virtually.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh welcomed the physical participation of the Kuki-Zo MLAs, describing it as a positive development towards peace and unity in Manipur.
“This is a good sign from the people’s representatives and a welcome step,” the Chief Minister said, adding that Manipur could move towards peace through collective efforts.
Khemchand Singh also attributed the development to the state government’s continued efforts to address and reduce the trust deficit between different communities. He reiterated his government’s commitment to inclusive dialogue and reconciliation.
The physical return of the two MLAs comes amid ongoing efforts to restore political engagement among communities divided by the ethnic conflict in Manipur.
Following the formation of the BJP-led government under Khemchand Singh on February 4, 2026, Kuki-Zo MLAs had attended earlier Assembly sittings virtually. Wednesday’s physical attendance marked a significant change from that arrangement.
