CoTU extends total shutdown in Kuki-Zo areas by another 48 hours

KANGPOKPI, November 2, 2026: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi District, has announced an extension of the ongoing total shutdown for another 48 hours, strongly condemning what it described as the government's continued inaction and failure to deliver justice for the brutal killing of two innocent Kuki-Zo civilians.

In an urgent public notice issued on November 2, 2026, CoTU stated that the extension was in protest against the government's alleged indecision, unacceptable silence and failure to initiate any tangible action to ensure justice for the victims.

During the extended shutdown, schools, medical services, media and the airport will remain exempted for essential travel.

CoTU expressed serious concern over what it termed the government's persistent failure to act decisively in response to the killings. It stated that while two innocent lives had been lost, the authorities continued to demonstrate indecision and inaction, leaving the bereaved families and the wider community waiting for justice.

The committee described such governmental apathy as unacceptable, warning that it must not become another chapter of impunity. It further asserted that the Kuki-Zo people would not accept empty assurances, administrative excuses or endless deliberations in place of justice.

CoTU demanded that the government immediately demonstrate its seriousness through concrete, decisive and time-bound action against those responsible for the killings.

The committee also issued a strong warning that if the government failed to fulfil its responsibility to ensure immediate action and timely justice within the extended 48-hour period, the Kuki-Zo people would be compelled to convene a Mass Public Meeting.

The proposed meeting would collectively deliberate, determine and announce further courses of action. CoTU stated that the next course of action would be decided collectively and that the government must bear responsibility for the consequences of its continued failure to respond to the community's demand for justice.

Concluding its statement, CoTU emphasised that the patience of a grieving community must never be mistaken for weakness, nor should its demand for justice be treated with contempt.
