Minor raped by 3 men over 3 days in Gurugram, Delhi

GURUGRAM, 2019 AUG 09 [TOI] – A 14-year-old girl who came to the city from Meghalaya last week, believing the man escorting her all the way from home would enroll her with a placement agency, was allegedly raped repeatedly by three men over three days and molested by another. The teenager was held captive by the men who kept moving her from one location to another, shuttling Delhi and Gurugram

She was allegedly raped in Chauma village and Sector 39 in Gurugram, and at an unknown place in Delhi before being rescued from Chauma by two people from Meghalaya on August 6. She was taken to Meghalaya House in Delhi.

The three men accused of rape are Lokesh, Bhupender and an unidentified relative of Lokesh. The man accused of molestation has been identified as Omprakash Singh.

With the intervention of a parliamentarian from the northeast, a case was registered against the four men under sections 6 (penetrative sexual assault) and 8 (aggravated sexual assault) of the Pocso Act and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC at the Rajendra Park police station on Thursday.

Bhupender, Omprakash and a woman named Ritu, who has also been booked for criminal conspiracy, have been arrested and will be produced before court on Friday. Police spokesperson Subhash Boken said more arrests are likely soon.

Since the teenager has no knowledge of Hindi and English, a senior police officer posted in Meghalaya House acted as interpreter to record her statement.

According to police, the girl started her journey from her home in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district on July 30. She was accompanied by Aman alias Chottu, who runs a placement agency that provides maids and nursing assistants. The two reached Gurugram on August 2 and the minor was taken to a house in Rajendra Park where Aman, his brother Lokesh and a few others lived.

The girl’s ordeal began the next day on August 3 when, finding her alone at home, Lokesh alias Lambu molested her. In the evening, he took her to the house of his friend Ritu in Chauma.

On August 4, the minor was allegedly forced to drink liquor and was raped by Lokesh. The following day, on August 5, she was taken to a placement office in Sector 39 by Ritu. The office belongs to Bhupender, a resident of Royal Court.

The minor was again forced to drink alcohol and raped by Bhupender. Thereafter, Bhupender’s friend Omprakash, who is a resident of Palam Vihar, also reached the office and molested the girl. In the evening, she was brought back to Ritu’s place.

On August 6, Lokesh took the girl to a house in Delhi, where she was again raped by a person whose identity has not yet been established. The teenager said in her complaint the house belonged to Lokesh’s cousin. The girl, who was drowsy under the influence of alcohol, fell down the stairs, following which Lokesh rushed to the spot and took her back to Ritu’s house in Chauma.

There, the girl managed to contact a person from Meghalaya whom she had met at the house in Rajendra Park on the day of her arrival. The following day, she was about to be shifted to another place when Salman Sangma and Gelsing Marak rescued her and brought her back to Rajendra Park. They then approached Meghalaya House.

Salman and Gelsing told police that after receiving her call, they had pressured Lokesh’s girlfriend for the girl’s location. “They took the girl to Meghalaya House where officials and a leader from the northeast came forward to help and Delhi Police was informed,” a senior Gurugram police officer said.

Aman, who brought the girl to Gurugram, has not been arrested yet.

Gang of four: the men convicted for December 16 Delhi gang-rape

New Delhi, Sep 10, 2013 [AFP/ Hindustan Times] --- The four men convicted on Tuesday over the December 16 New Delhi gang-rape lived in and around Ram Dass Camp, an unauthorised slum in the south of the Delhi favoured by hundreds of labourers.

Residents there complain of the ignominy of being associated with the men, particularly the ringleaders whom they remember as heavy-drinking troublemakers known for their abusive language and disregard for neighbours.

Ram Singh, the regular driver of the bus used for the attack and one of the main instigators of the crime, was found hanging in his prison cell in maximum-security Tihar jail on March 12 in a suspected suicide.

The 32-year-old had confessed privately to his role, according to his parents, but during the trial he had denied the long list of charges including murder, rape and kidnapping.

Here are profiles of the four men convicted, as well as the fifth under-age suspect who was sentenced to three years in a correctional facility on August 31.

Mukesh Singh
The brother of Ram Singh who migrated to New Delhi from his ancestral village in the western desert state of Rajasthan. He frequently worked with his brother on the bus and also tried getting a job with a construction company in Delhi.

During court proceedings in April, the unmarried labourer, who has a tattoo of two swords signifying "bravery" on his left arm, told AFP he was a "very hard working man" and wanted to "lead a simple life".

Aged 29 at the time of the crime, he denied the charges against him and told the court that he "respected women".

Vinay Sharma
Aged 20 at the time of the crime, he denied being on the bus. He earned $100 a month as a helper at a local gym and lived in the same neighbourhood as Mukesh and Ram Singh.

He had completed his schooling, unlike the other convicts who are school dropouts, and during the trial said he wanted to appear for a recruitment test for a job with the Indian Air Force.

Sharma submitted an application to the judge to be moved out of Tihar jail after being assaulted by inmates. He suffered a fractured left hand while in custody.

Pawan Gupta
The youngest of the rapists, aged 19, Gupta was a fruitseller who also worked as labourer on roads and construction sites for a couple of dollars a day. During wedding season, he would work with a catering company.

He was arrested at the Ram Dass Camp where he lived with his cousin and was known as a friend of Ram Singh.

Akshay Thakur
A married father of a two-year-old son, Thakur also worked as a helper with Ram Singh and had earlier been employed in a local liquor factory and in a brick kiln.

Aged 28 at the time of the crime, he fled from Delhi on December 17, but was arrested at his father-in-law's home in the eastern state of Bihar. His wife, Punita Devi, told the police, that if her husband is found guilty then he should be "shot dead".

A juvenile
A 17-year-old at the time of the attack, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is a run-away who fled his home in impoverished Uttar Pradesh state at the age of 11.

His mother told the police that he was the eldest of her six children and that she had no contact with him during his time in the capital where he had no fixed job or address and often slept rough.

He cleaned Ram Singh's bus and in winter slept inside the vehicle.

Mother and daughter gang-raped in Bihar, 3 arrested

Patna, April 24, 2013 [IANS] --- Three people have been arrested in Bihar for abducting and raping the mother and sister of a youth as a revenge for his eloping with the sister of one of the accused, police said Wednesday.

The attack took place in Sariswa village under Majhaulia police station of West Champaran district April 19, but came to light after a case was lodged with the police.
"Three people were arrested after an FIR (first information report) was lodged on the basis of the statement of gang-raped victims," Superintendent of Police Sunil Nayak told IANS.

"The gang-rape was committed by four people," Nayak said. He added that three accused identified as Subhash Yadav, Suresh Yadav and Rameekbali Yadav were arrested Tuesday, while hunt is now on to nab the fourth attacker.

Police have recovered the torn clothes of the victims from the house of Suresh during an investigation.

According to police, the victims were first kidnapped and then taken to the house of Suresh where "both were gang-raped by them".

The youth, whose mother and sister were gang-raped, had eloped with Suresh's sister in January this year, a police official said.

Delhi: Woman gangraped in a moving car by husband and two others

New Delhi, April 12, 2013 [IANS] --- A 20-year-old woman was gang-raped in a moving car by her husband and his two relatives here, police said Thursday. All attackers have been arrested.

The incident came to light late Wednesday evening when the woman was found in an unconscious condition in west Delhi's Najafgarh area by a passerby, who informed police.

The victim told police that she was gang-raped by her husband Inderjeet and his two relatives Nitin and Vijender -- all in the age group of 21 and 25 -- in a moving car.

The woman told police that she was gang-raped after she consumed a cold drink offered by her husband and got unconscious.

The woman, a resident of Haryana's Jhajjar district, married Inderjeet at a temple in March without informing their parents, police said.

"The victim's medical examination was conducted at a hospital where doctors confirmed that she was gang-raped," said a police officer.

A case was registered Thursday based on the woman's statement and her attackers were arrested from their hideouts in west Delhi's Bakkarwala village.

"She was called by Inderjeet to meet him here Wednesday to register their marriage through court. After arriving in Delhi, the woman was taken by Inderjeet in a car in which Nitin and Vijender were already sitting," said the officer, citing from the women's statement.

Gangrape survivor denied admission by schools in Meghalaya

Meghalaya, 26 March 2013 [CNN-IBN] --- Even after the arrest of 16 accused - minors and adults - in a gangrape case in Meghalaya, the survivor is still being victimised. The 18-year-old was forced to shift towns to escape harassment and is now being denied admission by new schools.

Two schools in Tura town in Meghalaya have refused admission to the 18-year-old gangrape survivor. The teenager was gangraped in a lane at Williamnagar in Garo Hills on the night of December 13, 2012. When CNN-IBN met her earlier, she had only one request. She wanted to change her school.

Bleeding and semi-conscious, on that December night she was dropped off to her home by two boys. "I was coming back from the winter festival with two other friends. A group of boys chased us. I ran and fell down. They hit me with a stone. I fell down and then they tore my clothes and raped me. I recognized two boys," she said.

Her parents were in shock when CNN-IBN met them in January. "It is a shame that boys from our community did this. My daughter should get justice," said the survivor's mother.

Nothing has changed or moved. Things have only got worse for the family. The girl has been photographed by the family members of the alleged rapists and threatened to withdraw the case in a manner activists had been threatened before.

With the help of student organisations she moved to Tura for a new start and a new school. But schools don't want to give admission to a gangrape victim.

All the 16 boys have been arrested. Eight of them are in juvenile custody and eight in jail. The trial has begun, but Williamnagar does not have a fast-track court.

"People are less bothered. They don't feel angry it seems. We came for a public protest. But nobody came out. We even called them with a microphone. Nobody came out," PMDR member Jaynie Ninring said.

The case was overshadowed by the Meghalaya elections and now with this rejection, it is one more day in the long wait for justice.

Who was Delhi rape accused Ram Singh? All you need to know

New Delhi, Mar 11 [firstpost.com] --- The sudden death of prime accused in the horrific 16 December Delhi gangrape Ram Singh, who committed suicide inside Tihar jail, is likely to affect the outcome of the trial say lawyers and experts. Here is a quick look at who he is and what his role in the rape was.

Prime accused in Delhi gangrape case:

Ram Singh, the driver of the bus in which the horrific gangrape was carried out, was the main accused in the case.  Singh, instead of parking the white chartered bus with its owner, had kept the vehicle with him on the night of the incident, reportedly met the other accused for dinner and then took the bus to drive around Delhi.

The group picked up the 23-year-old woman and her male friend as they were attempting to travel home after watching a film together.  The bus was driven through the bustling south Delhi areas of Munirka, Vasant Vihar and Mahipalpur as the six men raped and tortured the girl and beat her friend, using iron rods and other weapons.

According to the police report, the attack lasted at least 45 minutes.

There were six attackers, one of whom claims to be a juvenile and is being tried separately. Each of the men raped the 23-year-old woman, with at least two taking turns driving the bus. They penetrated her with two metal rods, causing such severe internal injuries that doctors later found parts of her intestines floating freely inside her abdomen.

The couple was stripped, robbed and thrown off the bus near Mahipalpur.

After fighting for her life for almost a fortnight, the 23-year-old woman breathed her last in Singapore on 29 December.

What he reportedly told the police

Singh reportedly had told the police that he had brutally assaulted the 23-year-old woman because she had resisted his attempt to rape her and bitten him.

According to police sources, Singh was drunk and he lost his cool when the girl bit him. After he was bitten he and his friends started beating the girl and her male friend with iron rods.

He had also snatched three mobile phones belonging to the girl and her friend so that they could not dial anyone for help after being thrown from the bus.

Singh had reportedly told the police that he had tried to destroy the evidence by washing the bus and also asked his accomplices not to talk about the incident. He parked the bus at RK Puram and later took it to its owner in Noida.

It was reportedly based on Ram Singh's confession that the police were able to arrest the others involved in the case, including his brother.

Ram Singh, with the four others, were charged with murder, gangrape, attempt to murder, kidnapping, unnatural offences, dacoity, hurting in committing robbery, destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and common intention under the Indian Penal Code.

Singh and the others in Tihar Jail had reportedly been assaulted by other inmates when they were taken in and had also been put on 'suicide watch'.

His background

Singh was a bus driver, despite an accident in 2009 that fractured his right arm so badly that doctors had to insert a rod to support it. He appeared on a reality television show in a compensation dispute with a bus owner, who in turn accused Singh of "drunken, negligent and rash driving".

Singh's neighbours describe him as a heavy drinker with a bad temper. One young woman said he used to get embroiled in violent rows and a relative recalled a physical altercation with her husband.

A Mail Today report  documents Singh as being a 'muscleman' in the Ravi Dass camp area of RK Puram in Delhi, a pocket of shanties in an otherwise upper middle class neighbourhood. Known for his drunken brawls in the neighbourhood, he had even reportedly eloped with a married woman, only to return after she passed away.

However, his parents had tried to justify their son's involvement in the heinous crime.

"They (Ram Singh and Mukesh) were not like this. In 20 years, they have never committed a crime. They must have been in bad company. As regards alcohol, that's common among drivers," Mangi Lal, the father of two of the accused, was quoted as saying in this Firstpost report.

Ram Singh had pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

His death

Ram Singh died inside Tihar jail on 10 March. Prison authorities say he committed suicide using the clothes he was wearing to hang himself. The DG Prisons confirmed to CNN-IBN that Ram Singh committed suicide. However a magisterial inquiry has been launched into the incident, which is likely to impact the course of the trial. The death is also being seen as a major embarrassment to the Delhi police and Tihar jail officials.

14-year-old gang-raped in Kolkata, 2 arrested

Kolkata, March 11, 2013 [IANS] --- A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in the wee hours of Monday in the city's Jadavpur area. Two of the accused have been arrested, police said.
"Following a complaint of gang-rape we have arrested two persons. The 14-year-old victim was allegedly raped and at least three to four persons are suspected to be involved," Deputy Commissioner (Jadavpur) Sujay Chanda said.
"A medical test on the victim to ascertain rape will be conducted soon," Chanda said.

While her companion fled the spot, the victim was forcibly taken by the youths to a building still under construction and raped.

Delhi gang-rape case: Supreme Court rejects transfer of trial outside Delhi

New Delhi, 29 Jan 2013 [TIMES OF INDIA] --- The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea to shift the trial in Delhi gang rape case to a place outside the national capital.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir dismissed the transfer petition upon the receipt of the sessions judge's report that the accused, on whose behalf the transfer petition was moved, does not want to be represented by advocate ML Sharma.

Rejecting the transfer petition, the court said that the advocate has no locus standi to appear in the matter on behalf of one of the gang-rape accused, Mukesh.

In the course of the last hearing of the case, the apex court had asked the sessions judge, trying the Dec 16, 2012, gang-rape case, to ascertain as to whom the accused would like to engage as his counsel.

The situation arose after another advocate, VK Anand, told the court that it was he who actually represented the accused before the trial court.

The sessions judge, in his report to the apex court, which was opened Tuesday in the court room, said that the accused wanted to be represented by advocate Anand.

Anand, in the course of the last hearing, said that he was not seeking any transfer of trial outside Delhi.

Earlier, accused Mukesh had sought the shifting of the case to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh or any other state, as he apprehended he would not get free and fair trial in the city.

The petition said that Mukesh did not expect a free and fair trial in Delhi as the judiciary was under tremendous pressure because of personal interest shown by chief minister Sheila Dikshit and others.

Besides the public pressure and unending public agitations over the incident, the petition drew the apex court's attention to some of the statements made by the serving and retired judges of the higher judiciary who sought changes in the law for an expeditious trial of rape accused.

The petition said the attitude of police and jail authorities was totally biased against the petitioner.

Ram Singh, Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur were charged with gang-raping and brutally assaulting a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus Dec 16. The victim died in aSingapore hospital December 29.

Delhi gangrape case hearing on Jan 21

New Delhi, 17 Jan 2013 [CNN-IBN] --- Just a month after the brutal gangrape of the 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus in the national capital, a Metropolitan Magistrate court in Delhi on Thursday committed the case to a fast-track court. The hearing in the case will begin on January 21.

This comes even as the prime accused in the case, Ram Singh, has decided to move the Supreme Court to transfer the case away from Delhi to any other state except for Uttar Pradesh. Ram Singh, who is the driver of the bus in which the gangrape took place, expressed apprehension about getting justice in Delhi.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Juvenile Justice Board reserved its order on the age of the minor accused in the case till January 28. On Tuesday, two school principals, former and current, of the minor accused appeared before the court. Their statements were recorded and the court reserved its order till January 28.

This comes even as the prime accused has decided to move the Supreme Court, seeking transfer of the case from Delhi.

The accused's principal was earlier summoned by the board to help determine the exact age of the accused who claims to be 17 years old. The board, however, was not satisfied by the documents presented and had asked the principal to furnish more authentic documents. If the magistrate is not satisfied with the final documents that were presented today, they can order a bone ossification test.

7 MEN ALLEGEDLY GANGRAPED A PUNJABI GIRL, 5 HELD

Gurdaspur (PUNJAB), 12 Jan 2013 [PTI]: In a case similar to the gang-rape of a physiotherapy student in New Delhi, a 29-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by seven persons in Gurdaspur in Punjab.

The victim was on her way to her village in Ghukla - which falls under Kahnuwan police station - in a bus when the driver and conductor kidnapped her and took her to an undisclosed location where they and their five accomplices gang-raped her last night, Gurdaspur Raj Jeet Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), told reporters.

He said five of the seven accused had been arrested while two others, who are yet to be identified, were still absconding. Based on the interrogation of the five accused, efforts were on to arrest the remaining persons, he added.

The victim, in her complaint, said that she was coming back from her parent's village in Jagatpur in Pathankot in a bus but the driver, Daler Singh, did not stop the vehicle at the bus stand in Ghukla.

Her request to the conductor, Ravi, to ask the driver to stop the bus went unnoticed.

They took her to a place near Gurdaspur, where five of the duo's friends joined them and gang-raped the woman in a house, the police official said.

The driver dumped the victim at a place near her village this morning, he said. The woman first went to her house and then came to the police station to file her complaint, he added.

A case of rape under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the seven accused, Mr Singh said.

The five arrested have been identified as Daler Singh, Ravi, Jaswinder Singh, Jagpreet Singh and Satwant Singh, he said.

Teams have been have been formed to nab the absconding men, he said.

Police said the First Information Report (FIR) was registered this evening.

The woman would be sent for medical examination, the police said, adding the accused had confessed to their crime during preliminary interrogation.

Delhi gangrape victim's father: I want the world to know my daughter's name is Jyoti Singh Pandey

Devastated dad tells The Sunday People he hopes revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived such attacks

New Delhi, 5 Jan 2013 [MIRROR.CO.UK] ---  She is known to the world only as India's Daughter following her sickening gang rape and murder.

But today, with permission of her devastated father, we can reveal her name: Jyoti Singh Pandey.

Brave dad Badri, 53, told The Sunday People: "We want the world to know her real name.

"My daughter didn't do anything wrong, she died while protecting herself.

"I am proud of her. Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks. They will find strength from my daughter."

We interviewed Badri and his family in his ancestral village of Billia in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

They have retreated there to grieve away from their Delhi home – a place that will constantly remind them of the barbaric sexual attack Jyoti, 23, was subjected to when she and a male friend were lured on to a bus.

His wife Asha, 46, was too shell-shocked to talk to us.

Badri said: "At first I wanted to see the men responsible face to face but I don't want to any more. I just want to hear that the courts have punished them and they will be hanged.

"Death for all six of them. These men are beasts. They should be made an example of and that society will not allow such things to happen."

Recalling the day he found out about his only daughter's ordeal, Badri said he had just returned home after 10:30pm on December 16 from his shift at Delhi airport where he works as a loader.

His wife was worried after Jyoti, a medical school graduate, had not returned home from the cinema.

Badri said: "We started calling her mobile and her friend's mobile but there was no answer.

"Then at 11.15pm we got a call from the hospital in Delhi telling me my daughter had been in an accident."

Badri asked a friend to take him on a motorbike.

He said: "When I first saw her she was in the bed with her eyes closed.

"I put my hand on her forehead and called her name. She slowly opened her eyes and started crying and said she was in pain.

"I held my tears. I told her not to worry, have strength and everything will be all right."

At the time Badri still didn't know what had happened. A policeman finally explained. Jyoti and her friend Awindra Pandey, 28, had boarded a bus to get home but had been taken on a two-and-a-half hour ride to hell by the driver, his assistant and four passengers.

Both were battered with iron bars and Jyoti was repeatedly raped before they were stripped and dumped on a road leading to Delhi airport – yards from where Badri was working.

He said: "I immediately called my wife and sons and told them to come to the hospital. But I couldn't tell them about the rape."

For the first ten days Jyoti was in and out of consciousness and it was hopeful she would survive. Badri said: "Doctors did their best to save her. She spoke a few times but mostly through gestures. She had a feeding pipe in her mouth making it difficult for her to speak.

But she did write on some paper that she wanted to live, she wanted to survive and stay with us. But it was fate that had the last say in the end."

Jyoti gave the police two statements, but Badri was too distraught to sit in as he couldn't listen to what his daughter had been subjected to.

"My wife was with her through the statements but she cried so much after hearing it all," Badri said.

"She then told me what happened. I don't have the words to describe the incident. All I can say is they're not human, not even animals. They're not of this world.

"It was just gruesome and I hope no one ever goes through what she had to endure.

"She cried a lot, she was in a lot of pain. And as soon as she saw her mother and brothers she cried again.

"But after that she was a courageous girl, even trying to console us and give us hope that everything will be all right."

Doctors were forced to remove Jyoti's intestines and as her conditioned worsened, they flew her to Singapore for specialist care on Boxing Day.

Badri said: "I told her everything would be OK and we'll soon be back home. She was excited when we talked about going home and she smiled.

"I put my hand on her forehead, she asked me if I'd had any dinner and then she gestured for me to go to sleep. I held her hand and kissed it. I told her to take rest and not to worry and she closed her eyes."

As Jyoti battled for life, thousands took to the streets to demand the hanging of the six accused and a new anti-rape law. But three days later on December 29 she had a fatal heart attack.

Badri said: "I so desperately wanted her to survive, even though she would have to live with a memory of that attack and get through her trauma.

"We're so devastated that she's gone. There's a huge void in our lives. She was the centre of our universe. Our lives revolved around her.

"Her absence is so painful, a future without her is unimaginable."

Badri said Jyoti's friend Awindra was not her boyfriend – just a very brave friend who tried to save her.

He said: "There was no question of her marrying because we belong to different castes.

"She never expressed a desire to marry. She was concentrating on her studies and wanted a job first."

Badri also revealed that Jyoti often mentioned how much Awindra tried to save her.

"She kept telling her mother he tried his best to help but they kept beating him with a rod."

Badri now cherishes the memories of his daughter. He remembers her dream of being a doctor.

He said: "I told her I can't afford to pay for her to do such subjects but she was determined. She wanted to be a doctor and earn lots of money and go overseas a lot."

When Badri first moved to Delhi in 1983 he earned just 150 Rupees a month – the equivalent of £1.70 today.

But he sold some land to pay for his daughter's studies and saved as much as possible from his 5,700 Rupees (£65) a month he now earns.

Badri said: "It's hard living in Delhi on my wages, very hard. But Jyoti always said she would change all of that. She wanted to change our lives once she got a job."

Jyoti had only just finished her four-year course in physiotherapy at college outside Delhi. She was doing an internship when she was attacked.

Her brothers, Gaurav Singh, 20, and Saurav Singh, 15, were close to their big sister and cannot image how they will cope.

Gaurav said: "Life is going to be so difficult without her. Without her guidance I don't know what to do or how to go about life again."

Badri and all the family have been touched by the way the nation has supported them.

He said: "The people of India have given us strength to cope up with our loss. I feel she's not just my daughter but also India's daughter.

"I used to read about rape incidents in the newspapers but never digested it much. We're so thankful to the people who came out to protest against the barbarity."

DNA tests have linked five men and a 17-year-old from the bus with rape and murder. The men will appear at the District Court in the Saket area of the Indian capital tomorrow. The 17-year-old will be tried separately as a juvenile.

Badri now hopes mothers and fathers will teach their sons to respect women.

He said: "The police cannot handle this on their own. But parents need to keep an eye on their children too."

Badri's face lit up when he spoke of Jyoti's dreams and invited us to look through his family album. Each photo showed his beautiful daughter smiling. In most she is wears western clothes, which she favoured over the traditional sari. She also always wore her long, dark shiny hair down and flowing – never tied up.

In respect with Badri's wishes he has asked us not to picture her.

Releasing a photo of her is for another day.

Indian law prohibits naming a rape victim unless she authorises it or, if she is dead, her family agrees to it.

At the moment it is enough for the devastated family to sanction the release to the world of their precious daughter's name.

BJP man arrested for rape in Delhi

New Delhi, 6 Jan 2013 [TOI] --- A 40-year-old politician belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party was arrested in Mongolpuri on Friday for rape. The accused, Yogesh Attrey, had been sexually exploiting a 34-year-old woman for the last five years by promising her marriage, police said.

"We received her complaint on Thursday and arrested Attrey," said DCP (outer) B S Jaiswal.

Attrey is a resident of Sector 24, Rohini. The woman works for an NGO. "Her statement was recorded according to CrPC Section 164 and her medical report confirmed rape. We registered a case of rape at the Vijay Vihar police station and are investigating the case," said Jaiswal.

The complainant told cops that Attrey had been exploiting her since 2007 and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed their relationship.

Police have also slapped charges under IPC Section 313 (causing miscarriage without the woman's consent); but when questioned if the woman was forced to undergo abortion, police kept mum.

Incidentally, Attrey had contested in the 2008 Delhi assembly elections, said a source, adding that he had lost by 30,115 votes.
