YPA Hosts Workshop on Disaster Preparedness and Response Mechanisms

New Delhi, August 16, 2013: The Young Paite Association (YPA), Joint Headquarters, Delhi, organised a workshop titled “Disaster Preparedness and Streamlining Support in Distress Situations” at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on August 15, 2013. This event was held as part of YPA’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration (1953–2013), aiming to promote awareness and build a support system, particularly for communities from the North-Eastern states.

Key participants included representatives from Delhi Police, experts from the Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA), New Delhi, as well as social activists and professionals who served as resource persons and panelists. A session led by Delhi Police highlighted the initiatives taken for the safety of North East residents in Delhi. Mr Peniel Malakar, a disaster management expert from EHA, spoke on the importance of disaster preparedness.

Mr Thangso Baite, Member of Parliament (Outer Manipur) and Val Upa of YPA JHQ Delhi, graced the occasion as the special invitee. Emphasising the need to prioritise saving human lives in any crisis, he stated, “We have to know the situation and act accordingly.” Mr Thangzalun Khuptong, President of YPA Joint Headquarters, delivered the keynote address. Ms Niangkhannem Guite moderated the first session, while the second session was jointly moderated by Mr T. Kaithang and Mr Ngulminthang Langel.

The second session featured in-depth discussions on various aspects of disaster response. Dr Joycelyn Ngaihlun (CMO, Hindu Rao Hospital), Dr Thangchinkhup (CMO, Delhi Government Health Services), and Ms Kamkhoching (GB Pant Hospital) addressed issues related to medical aid and facilities. Mr N. Vumsuan, Assistant Director of the Intelligence Bureau, spoke on the role of public gathering spaces and information centres during emergencies. Personal safety and security were discussed by Ms Ninglun Hanghal, a freelance journalist, Ms Chingmuankim of the Delhi Police, and Mr Benjamin Samte, President of SSPP Delhi.

Legal concerns and complications during disasters were discussed by Ms Mercy K. Khaute, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, Delhi University. Topics on mental health—such as depression, frustration, and disappointment—were addressed by Dr Chinkholal Thangshing, founder president of The Touch of Hope Foundation, Rev. J. Mangte, pastor of ZCF Delhi, and Ms Jenny Hoipineng, a psychologist from Ambedkar University.

The workshop proved to be an insightful platform for building collective knowledge, encouraging preparedness, and creating a responsive support network for dealing with disasters effectively.
