SKM to intensify Struggle against Privatisation of Electricity
Mass Demonstrations in Uttar Pradesh on 4th December 2024
*Demands to Suspend SECI Agreements with ADANI GREENS and AZURE POWER*
*SKM warns PM Modi of mass protest if the Government sticks to no investigation against corrupt Solar Project of ADANI Group*
SKM strongly condemns the authoritarian NDA3 Government for shielding the alleged corrupt Corporate House of ADANI Group for bribery to gain lucrative electricity supply contracts in India between Solar Energy Corporation of India and various State Electricity Distribution Corporations. The Department of Justice in the United States of America had registered a case against the top brass of ADANI Group including Gautam Adani on the allegation of corruption of Rs. 2029 crore (as per the then exchange value) to bribe the bureaucrats in India.
The case registered against ADANI Group in the USA corroborates SKM's demand of no privatisation of the electricity sector and prepaid smart meters that will impose huge exploitation of the people by DE-regulating tariffs for corporate profiteering. This was one of the major demands of the one year long historic farmers struggle in Delhi borders. NDA2 Government had signed an agreement with SKM on 9th December 2021 and assured not to proceed on the Privatisation of Electricity Bill 2020 without consulting SKM. However, the Prime Minister violated the same, waving a green flag to the corporate cronies to commercialise the electricity sector thus endangering the development of both production and service sectors.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) had awarded Power Supply Agreements to ADANI GREENS and to AZURE POWER on 10 December 2019. The allegation in the US is that ADANI Group had bribed the Officials of State Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Jammu Kashmir to gain power supply agreement with SECI. ADANI Group had misguided investors to collect share capital for the project from the public in the USA that comes under the provisions of the Foreign Extortion Prevention Act (FEPA) in addition to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).
The procedure against the Adani Group had been started in the US District Court at least two years back. But no investigations were initiated on this serious disclosure of corruption of thousands of crores that involved top officers of five State governments and the Central Government agency in India reveals dereliction of duties by SEBI, SECI, CBI and the Home Department. This is a total failure of the Administration under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
SKM strongly condemned the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Speaker of Rajya Sabha Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar for not allowing debate in the Parliament on the demand of the Opposition to investigate the serious graft charges against the ADANI Group brass. Not allowing discussion is against the rich tradition of the Parliament and an assault on the democratic system of parliamentary governance.
If the PM Modi's Administration continues with the adamant stand to protect the accused in the corrupt ADANI solar project, SKM will be forced to call for mass protest in support of the demand for discussion in the Parliament and Joint Parliamentary Committee - JPC- Investigation.
SKM calls up on the platforms of workers, students, youth, women and all other social sections to rally against corruption at the highest levels of governance under the NDA 3 Government.
SKM Uttar Pradesh State Coordination Committee has issued a call to conduct protest demonstrations against the privatisation of Electricity in the State on 4th December 2024. SKM calls upon all its State leadership to intensify the struggle against privatisation of electricity and boycott the prepaid smart meters.
