Clarification on Haokip Identity – Letter by Sehpu Haokip, 1995

Dated: Oct. 9, 1995.

To,
The President
Haokip People's Council (HPC)
Karbi-Anglong, Assam.

To my Haokip brethren in Karbi-Anglong:

Greetings to all my Haokip brethren in Assam especially those in Karbi-Anglong.

I'm disheartened to hear about the problems faced by the Haokips in Assam due to a misunderstanding. So I would like to make a small clarification. We Haokips are Thadous whether it's based on genealogy or tribe. Due to a misunderstanding, tribes list in Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya were made at their own conveniences resulting in this unproductive problem amongst us. Kuki is just a generic nomenclature made up of different tribes (which do not classify under Naga, Khasi, Garo, Cachari etc) and Thadou is one such tribe under Kuki. Thadou consists of 32 clans having the same lifestyle and tradition (Culture & Custom) such as the dialect and pattern of the weaved clothing eg. Thangnang, Saipikhup, Mongvom, Khamtang. Those of us who claim these to be our traditional shawls are Thadous. Therefore we Haokips are Thadous and you should no longer concern yourself with whether you should or shouldn't be Thadou.

Thanking you.

Your brethren,
Sehpu Haokip
M.L.A.
