Need Help for Drug Abusers: A Call to Save Our Youth

Drug abuse is not just an individual problem—it is a social crisis that eats away at families, communities, and the future of our society. The disturbing images of young man lying unconscious, possibly after taking drugs, are becoming too common in Lamka town. Each picture tells a story of lost potential, broken dreams, and silent cries for help.

Today, Upa Hangkhankhup, President of the Thangkhal Baptist Church, shared his heartfelt concern while undergoing medical treatment in Delhi. “Many of us come to Delhi to seek good health and medical check-ups. But sadly, some of our youths are running toward death in our hometown. It is so painful,” he said. His words remind us that while some seek life and healing, others are falling deeper into the trap of addiction.

The Growing Crisis

Drug abuse, especially among the youth, is spreading like wildfire. Easy availability of narcotics, peer pressure, unemployment, and a lack of awareness are fueling this dangerous trend. The victims are not only young men but also young women, students, and even teenagers. What begins as “just trying” or “fun with friends” often ends in dependency and tragedy.

This growing crisis is not only a health issue but also a moral and social one. When young people lose themselves to drugs, families are torn apart. Communities lose their strength, and the future of society becomes uncertain.

Why We Must Act

Every addict is someone’s child, someone’s sibling, someone’s friend. No one chooses to become a drug abuser intentionally. Many fall into it because of loneliness, depression, broken families, or wrong company. Others use drugs as an escape from poverty and hopelessness.

It is easy to blame and shame drug users, but what they really need is help, compassion, and rehabilitation. Condemnation pushes them further into darkness, while support can bring them back into the light. Society must understand that drug abusers are not criminals by choice—they are patients who need treatment and care.

The Role of Family and Community

Families must play a central role in helping drug abusers. Open conversations, emotional support, and early intervention can prevent many young lives from being destroyed. Parents should be vigilant, not judgmental, and provide a safe environment for their children to share their struggles.

Churches, social organizations, and philanthropists must also step up. Awareness programs, counseling centers, and rehabilitation homes are urgently needed. Pastors and social workers can offer both spiritual and emotional support to victims and their families. Communities must unite to break the silence around drug abuse and create a culture of hope and healing.

What Can Be Done

1. Rehabilitation and Counseling: More affordable and accessible rehab centers should be set up to provide medical and psychological care.

2. Awareness Campaigns: Schools, colleges, and churches should conduct regular awareness programs about the dangers of drug use.

3. Skill Development: Providing education, vocational training, and job opportunities can keep young people away from drugs.

4. Community Watch: Local groups can help monitor drug peddling and assist law enforcement in stopping the supply of narcotics.

5. Spiritual and Moral Guidance: Faith-based organizations can guide youths toward positive living, giving them purpose and strength to fight temptation.

The words of Upa Hangkhankhup are not just a personal reflection but a clarion call for all of us. We cannot afford to lose our youths to drugs. Every life matters, and every addict deserves a chance to heal and rebuild. The need for help is urgent, and the responsibility lies with all of us—parents, leaders, churches, and society at large.

Let us not wait for another tragic picture to wake us up. The time to act is now. Together, we can save our children and secure the future of our community.
