Zomi Chiefs Condemns Assam Rifles’ Brutality on Guite Road

Lamka, Aug. 5, 2025 — The Zomi Chiefs’ Association (ZCA) has strongly condemned what it described as repeated acts of brutality and intimidation by the Assam Rifles along Guite Road (NH-102B), calling for urgent accountability.

In a statement issued from its General Headquarters, the ZCA denounced a recent incident of alleged misconduct, noting it followed similar cases, including one on July 17, 2025, in Singngat village, and the reported physical assault of Mr. Ginneihtuang (46) from Tangnuam village by Major Vadu Krishnan of the 37 Assam Rifles on July 6, 2025.

The association said these incidents point to “a disturbing and repeated pattern of unchecked military arrogance, misconduct, and abuse,” adding that this reflects “a systemic culture of impunity” rather than isolated lapses.

Guite Road, the ZCA stressed, is a crucial lifeline for the Zo people—especially since the ethnic violence outbreak on May 3, 2023—serving as the only safe and reliable travel corridor. “That this vital artery has now been transformed into a zone of terror, humiliation, and military intimidation is utterly unacceptable,” the statement read.

The association reaffirmed that the Zo people will not tolerate acts of terror under the guise of national duty. It urged the Assam Rifles to uphold their responsibility to protect civilians, maintain the rule of law, and preserve peace rather than “intimidate, brutalize, or dehumanize.”

The ZCA demanded immediate and unequivocal redress for the alleged abuses.
