24 Houses Burnt in Litan as Kuki, Tangkhul-Naga Communities Clash

Lamka, Feb 9: At least 24 houses were burnt in the Litan area following fresh tensions between the Kuki and Tangkhul-Naga communities on Monday. According to ground verification, 21 houses belonged to the Tangkhul-Naga community, while three houses belonged to the Kuki community.


In the aftermath of the incident, a joint verification and peace meeting was held with the participation of senior political leaders, civil and police officials, and representatives of community organisations.

Those present at the meeting included the Presidents of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL) and Katho Katamnao Long, the General Commanding Officer of the Assam Rifles, Ukhrul MLA, BJP State Vice President, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner, SDO, SDC, Additional Superintendent of Police, and other officials.

As per the verification report, houses and structures damaged or destroyed belonged to Khanringpam Vashum, Sejam Jim, Blessing Horam, Thanmihor Ngakang, Loken Kasar, Shangreikhai V.S., Tuireising Kasar (pharmacy), H. Sellynao, Maras, V. Cliff—including a Gypsy vehicle—and V. Thanmila, who shared a building while residing on different floors.

Other affected properties included those of L. Samson (including a Maruti van), Ramyen Kasar, K. Rocky, Shimreingam Rimai, Anonemos Jajo, Wungshim Kasar, Lamthang Baite, and Yamthang Baite.

In addition, PWD quarters were also set on fire. The damaged government residences belonged to Ngahor Ngalung, Tuireising Kasar, Alun Baite, and another PWD quarter, according to officials.

Authorities stated that the verification process was carried out to accurately assess losses caused by the incident.

The meeting concluded with both communities appealing for peace and mutual understanding.

Describing the meeting as productive, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho said, "The meeting was fruitful. Both sides want peace and harmony. The Centre will try its best to bring normalcy. No arrests have been made so far, but the culprits will be arrested."
