The Zomi Chiefs’ Association condemns in the strongest and most unequivocal terms the shocking incident that occurred on the night of 8 July 2026, in which the locked residence of Mr Ramhlunmawia Sailo, Chief of Nghathal village was forcibly broken into, and furniture and other household belongings were taken outside and set on fire. Such an act of trespass, destruction of property, intimidation, and lawlessness is completely unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
The Association recognises that differences of opinion, disputes, and misunderstandings may arise within any village or community. However, no disagreement gives anyone the right to take the law into their own hands or resort to violence, intimidation, and destruction. All disputes must be resolved through peaceful dialogue, mutual understanding, customary mechanisms, and lawful processes.
Traditional village chiefs hold a vital and respected position in Zo society and have long played an important role in village administration, community welfare, peace, and unity. A chief's residence has traditionally served not only as a private home but also as a place of leadership, consultation, safety, and refuge. An attack on such a residence is therefore a serious assault on the dignity of the institution of traditional chieftainship and the values of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect cherished by our society. Such acts must be condemned, irrespective of differences in tribe, clan, village, or opinion.
The Zomi Chiefs’ Association strongly appeals to all concerned to immediately cease all acts of violence, intimidation, provocation, and destruction. We urge every party to exercise restraint and resolve all differences through peaceful dialogue and lawful means.
The Zomi Chiefs’ Association remains firmly committed to peace, justice, mutual respect, and the peaceful resolution of all disputes.
