IMPHAL, August 12, 2026: The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has issued a directive calling upon its constituent and subordinate units, educational institutions and the Naga population to observe August 14 as the 80th Naga Independence Day.
The directive, issued on August 11 by ANSAM President Th. Angteshang Maring, follows resolutions adopted during the association’s 3rd Legislative Assembly Session held on August 10 for the 2024–2026 tenure. ANSAM directed all its constituent and subordinate units to hoist the Naga National Flag at their respective “Okings” on August 14 in commemoration of the Naga Independence Day.
It also called upon all government and non-government educational institutions and offices within Naga areas to declare a holiday on August 14 to mark the occasion. Further, ANSAM appealed to all Naga students, youths and the Naga population to abstain from attending or participating in India’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
According to the directive, the appeal is linked to what ANSAM described as the “betrayal” of the August 3, 2015 Framework Agreement, the militarisation and deployment of Indian armed forces under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Naga areas, alleged divide-and-rule policies, suppression of Naga rights and denial of justice in cases involving alleged human rights violations and crimes against Nagas.
ANSAM urged the leaders of its constituent and subordinate units to strictly enforce the directive within their respective jurisdictions.
