KCSU Withdraws From Nagaland Independence Day Programme

Kohima, August 13, 2026: The Kohima Chakhesang Students’ Union (KCSU) has withdrawn its participation from the upcoming Independence Day programme in Nagaland, citing a directive issued by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF).

In a letter dated August 13 addressed to the Director of the Art & Culture Department, Government of Nagaland, the KCSU said it would not be able to participate in the August 15 Independence Day programme.

The students’ union referred to the NSF notification issued on August 12, which expressed strong opposition to any form of compulsory observance and the singing of the revised Indian National Song, “Vande Mataram,” during official functions and educational institutions.

The KCSU said that, as a subordinate unit of the NSF, it was firmly committed to complying with the directive issued by the federation.

“Therefore, in solidarity with the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and in strict adherence to their mandate,” the KCSU stated, it was respectfully withdrawing its participation from the Independence Day programme.

The letter was signed by Kuwe Mekru, President, and Mhashekoyi Rhakho, General Secretary, of the KCSU.

The union reiterated its motto, “Unity Wins the Crown.”
