Manipur CM Highlights Sustained Peace and Reconciliation

IMPHAL, August 12, 2026: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s government has highlighted a sustained peace and reconciliation outreach across Manipur since he assumed office on February 4, 2026, with an emphasis on dialogue, mutual trust and community engagement.

According to a government document titled “The Path to Harmony: Chief Minister Shri Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s Enduring Commitment to Peace and Reconciliation,” the Chief Minister’s peace initiative has included visits to conflict-affected districts and meetings with community leaders, civil society organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders.

The document describes the Chief Minister’s visit to Churachandpur as a significant gesture towards reconciliation. It was reportedly the first visit by a sitting Chief Minister to the district since the outbreak of violence in May 2023. During the visit, Khemchand Singh attended the funeral of former MLA Vungzagin Valte, which he described as a gesture of respect and honour.

In Ukhrul district, the Chief Minister visited Thawai Kuki and Sharkaphung villages, where he appealed to the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities to address their differences and pursue peace and reconciliation.

The government document also points to developments in Jiribam, which the Chief Minister visited twice, on February 11 and April 4. It states that representatives of the Meitei, Kuki, Paite and Hmar communities came together to discuss restoring peace and shared a joint meal.

In July, Khemchand Singh visited Senapati district and met CSO leaders to seek their support for restoring peace. During a subsequent visit to Kangpokpi, the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Saitu MLA announced the reopening of National Highways for free movement and the resumption of the Imphal-Dimapur bus service.

The document further states that the government, with the support of central and state security forces, facilitated the surrender of 46 KCP (PWG) cadres in July. It also claims that more than 1,200 firearms, including around 600 weapons reportedly looted from government armouries, were recovered during the preceding five months.

In addition, the government highlighted intensified anti-narcotics operations, reporting 72 cases, 117 arrests and the seizure of large quantities of drugs and psychotropic substances.

The document said the Chief Minister has also held meetings with community leaders, CSOs and other stakeholders as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to the conflict. It specifically cited his meeting with the Kuki-Zo Council in Guwahati in March as a significant engagement in the reconciliation process.

The government has presented these initiatives as part of a broader effort to restore normalcy, strengthen inter-community dialogue and create conditions for lasting peace in Manipur.
