National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) held in Chandel

Chandel, August 10, 2026 (DIO): In a significant step towards generating awareness on the harmful effects of tobacco and to mobilize community participation, a Village Awareness Programme on Tobacco Free Village Initiative under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) was held today at Liwa Khullen Village, Chandel District. The programme was organised by the District Tobacco Control Cell, District Health Society, Chandel.

Dr. Laishram Deben Singh, DNO, NTCP, Chandel and Mutum Oken Singh, Counsellor, District Hospital, Chandel attended the programme as resource persons.

Dr. Laishram Deben Singh spoke on the objectives of NTCP, key provisions of COTPA 2003, and the health, social and economic impact of tobacco use. He urged the community to ensure that public places, schools and the entire village remain free from tobacco use.

Mutum Oken Singh conducted a session on tobacco cessation and counselling. He informed participants about available support services for quitting tobacco and emphasized the role of families in helping tobacco users adopt a tobacco-free lifestyle.

The event saw participation from village authorities, SHG members, youth, and residents of Liwa Khullen. As part of the programme, IEC materials on tobacco control were distributed. Attendees also took a pledge to support tobacco control measures and work towards making Liwa Khullen a tobacco-free village.
