ZUF Condemns NSCN-IM Firing, Rejects Extortion Allegations

The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has strongly condemned what it described as an unprovoked attack by NSCN-IM cadres on its personnel in the Samlengtiang area of Khoupum on August 1, 2026

In a press communiqué issued on Monday, ZUF alleged that NSCN-IM cadres opened fire at around 6:10 pm, forcing its members to respond in what it called legitimate self-defence. The organisation claimed that several NSCN-IM cadres were reportedly injured during the exchange of fire.

According to the statement, ZUF accused NSCN-IM of attempting to disturb peace and stability in the Zeliangrong Homeland. It stated that its personnel exercised maximum restraint to prevent further escalation and safeguard civilian lives.

The organisation also denied allegations circulating on social media that its members intercepted a truck travelling from Jiribam to Imphal on July 30, collected taxes, and confiscated the driver's mobile phone. ZUF described the claims as false, fabricated, and intended to damage its reputation.

Furthermore, ZUF alleged that some NSCN-IM sympathisers have been using forged ZUF letterheads to illegally extort money from vehicles travelling along NH-37. The group warned that anyone found forging its documents, impersonating the organisation, or spreading false propaganda would face legal action.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, ZUF called on the public to reject misinformation, remain vigilant, and cooperate in maintaining peace, stability, and the rule of law across the Zeliangrong region.
