IMPHAL — In a major administrative development, the Secretariat: Minority Affairs Department of the Manipur government has accepted the immediate resignations of Rajya Sabha MP A. Sharda Devi and Koijam Modhusudon Singh from the newly constituted 8th Waqf Board, Manipur.
According to an official order (File No. GIA-2/4/2020-MA-MA) signed by Joint Secretary (MA) Gangmei Ganguilu on September 8, 2026, the Governor of Manipur approved the withdrawal of both members with immediate effect.
The 8th Waqf Board was originally constituted via a state notification on August 3, 2026, under Section 14(9) of the UMEED Act, 1995. Smt. A. Sharda Devi had been appointed as a member under Section 14(1)(b)(i) by virtue of her role as a Member of Parliament, while Shri Koijam Modhusudon Singh was appointed under Section 14(1)(f) to represent the Bar Council of the State.
The two members formally submitted their resignation letters on September 3, 2026, and September 4, 2026, respectively.
Their resignations follow widespread protests by local Muslim community groups and civil society organistions representing the Meitei Pangal community regarding the appointment of non-Muslim members to the state's Waqf Board.
