INDIRA GANDHI, the first female Prime Minister of India, was tragically shot dead on 31st October 1984 by her own bodyguards outside her residence in New Delhi.
A towering figure in Indian politics, she served as Prime Minister for nearly fifteen years across two distinct terms, leading the nation through monumental social changes and crucial geopolitical shifts.
Known as the 'Iron Lady of India', she demonstrated decisive leadership during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and spearheaded key economic reforms such as the nationalisation of major banks.
Every year on 31st October, Congress leaders and politicians across the political spectrum gather at her memorial, Indira Priyadarshini Smarak, to pay rich tributes to her memory.
Floral tributes, solemn prayers, and public gatherings are organised nationwide to reflect upon her steadfast devotion to the country. Her formidable legacy continues to inspire millions, marking her as one of the most influential political leaders in modern world history.
