THE dark cloud of violence hovering over Manipur has darkened even further after a series of horrific attacks left families shattered and communities in deep mourning. In a shocking turn of events, Pi Domkhonei Touthang, a mother of five, lost her life in Chassad village while peacefully protesting against the arbitrary detention of local youths. Reports indicate that state security personnel, specifically from the India Reserve Battalion, opened fire on unarmed women defending their local village guards. Shortly after, the violence claimed two more lives: Michael Ngamminlen Haokip, a 22-year-old youth, was killed during an attack on Chassad, while Sandeep Rai, a 45-year-old Gorkhali farmer, was ambushed and killed while driving to his rented farmland. These latest tragic incidents form part of a broader, alarming pattern of bloodshed in 2026, which has seen at least 29 Kuki-Zo civilians, including women, community pastors, elderly citizens, and even unborn children, lose their lives in targeted violence.
What makes these tragic incidents particularly alarming is the heavy criticism directed at the state government and its security apparatus. When state forces, tasked with maintaining law and order, are accused of using lethal force against peaceful female protesters, public trust completely collapses. Civil society groups have voiced strong anger over the apparent lack of neutrality within the local security machinery, alleging that elements within state forces are actively collaborating with armed insurgent outfits. The failure of both the state and central administrations to prevent renewed attacks, house burnings, and road ambushes points to a severe political and administrative failure. When law enforcement agencies become perceived as instruments of selective oppression rather than guardians of safety, lawlessness takes root, leaving vulnerable populations completely unprotected against armed violence.
The government must act immediately to restore justice, rebuild public confidence, and prevent the region from slipping further into absolute chaos. First, there must be a prompt, independent judicial investigation into the killings of Pi Domkhonei Touthang, Michael Ngamminlen Haokip, Sandeep Rai, and the dozens of Kuki-Zo civilians lost in preceding months, ensuring that all perpetrators are prosecuted without delay. Second, biased local security units should be replaced with neutral central security forces to safeguard vulnerable rural villages across exposed districts. Financial and humanitarian support must also be provided to the grieving families, especially the five young children left motherless in Chassad. However, the state government cannot remain a passive spectator while civilian lives are systematically destroyed. Peace will remain impossible until state authorities stop impunity, uphold the rule of law, and treat every human life with equal dignity and protection.
