A press release purportedly issued by the Federal Republic Government of Nagaland’s Ministry of Information and Publicity has directed shops and business establishments operated by non-locals in Naga-inhabited areas to shut down within 30 days of the notice dated October 23, 2026.
According to the release, the shutdown will be implemented in phases. The first phase will cover shops and business establishments within village jurisdictions, urban stations and town council areas after the expiry of the 30-day period.
The release states that municipal areas will be covered in a subsequent phase, with implementation to take place following further official notification. It also says that businesses operated by non-locals in municipal areas may continue operating without fear until such notification is issued.
The stated objective of the measure is to promote local entrepreneurship and economic self-reliance.
The release further calls on village authorities and churches to extend their cooperation in the interest of public welfare and the well-being of Naga society.
